Childhood Favorite- Freak the Mighty

I had not read Freak the Mighty in couple years so I was very excited that I was given the chance to in the past two weeks. Once i started to reread it I remembered why I had loved it so much when I was younger.
A theme that I tracked while rereading was the theme of  Loss and how it affects a person. Max had gone through so much and had so much loss in his life. The had to grow up living with his grandparents because his father had killed his mother and his father was in jail. It must be heartbreaking to feel like such an outcast and have kids act so churlish towards you because the actions and decision that his father made. Respect is a word I think many children forget as they are growing up and the golden rule, treat others the way you want to be treated, I mean hello they don't just call it the golden rule because its sounds nice. Why do teenagers have to be so rude? Max is his own person, he's not his dad and wants nothing to do with his dad.
The same with Kevin (Freak),  when he was a little kid the braces he had on his legs seemed so cool and Max said they made him look like robot, but as he grew older people began to talk about him and make fun of him because he was different. I mean I would rather have one friend who wasn't some fake person who talks about me than a thousand fake ones any day. I mean why would you want to be a conformist, fitting in is hard and sometimes I know that being anyone but myself is easier than just being Me. If everyone really cared about the reality of what it meant the world would be a better place. Freak and Max built their relationship on honesty and respect. They were best friends because they liked each other for who they truly were I mean even if one lived in "the down under" and the other one sat a shiny round table with King Arthur. Even if their best memoirs were made by thing imagined, they lived everyday knowing that they would always be their for each other and that no would could bring them down when they were Freak the mighty. I mean hey they were pretty different ,but  that keeps life interesting.
I'll leave you with the words of an extremely intelligent man I'm very fond of,  " You don't need a time machine if you now how to remember " . So, have respect, don't judge a book by it's cover and don't mess with Freak the Mighty.
