The Pact - Reading Response

The Pact by Jodi Picoult is the story of two families who are best friends and when they receive messages about the suicides of their children they learn that they didn't really know their kids, or at least as well as they thought.

This book really made me think about how sometimes we think we know people but we actually don't. People are straight forward they have layers of feelings and emotions. We think that we may know someone but do we? People sometimes hide issues that their facing or, problems they cant solve that they are running from. Many actors and actress' seem like they have the perfect life; fame, fortune and family, but they don't. Many people suffer from depression and have suicidal feelings, they hide these scary emotions and fake a smile because they don't know what to do. they seem like they have everything figured out but they don't. their just like us confused, lonely and afraid.

While reading I also thought about Chris and Emily's families. When you think you have such a close relationship with child but really they have problems and they don't want to live anymore, they just want to escape. To me it feels surreal, not only do your families have to cope with the loss of their children but the idea of blaming themselves for not knowing what their child was going through. How did you miss the signs? How did you not know? The haunting questions.

In conclusion, sometimes we don't really know the people we are close to. We have to take the time out and talk to people and see what their going through beacause on T.V. everyone seems happy and perfect but thats fake because no ones perfect and everyone has secrets.

  1. Ashley,

I like how you connected The Pact with television and explored how one can read two different types of texts.
